The untimely death of actor Heath Ledger has cast a gray cloud over an already gloomy entertainment and awards season. The death of the 28-year-old has shocked many and driven others into insanity. For what else could you call the acts of the religious right and Bible thumpers who have decried his death as justice for having played a gay role in a motion picture and are planning to picket his funeral? I find the degree to which people can hate unfathomable. Of course we all say we hate someone or something at some point in our lives, but to revile and loathe to such extents makes me wonder how we as a people can possibly call ourselves human beings.
Heath was a fantastic actor with a gifted talent. There are not many an actor (straight, gay or otherwise undecided) who would’ve had the balls to take on a gay role such as Ennis Del Mar in “Brokeback Mountain.” He brought his own uniqueness to that role and to all of the others he took on. As his character Ennis held on to his partner Jack’s shirt towards the end of “Brokeback Mountian” to mourn him, we now to hold on and mourn the loss of our brother. Heath you will be missed and loved. We will never quit you.

Ambrosius Vallin is the modern day Barnabas Collins, cursed by a witch for not loving her. Ambrosius has good in him, but is not beyond doing what’s necessary and using all of the power of Tresum to get what he wants. And what he wants most is the attention of the young man whose kiss freed him from 200 years of imprisonment.
Grace Neville personifies the old adage hell hath no furry like a woman scorned. For the rejection of her paramour, Ambrosius who left her for a man made her bitter, obsessed and forever changed. She embodied all that was wicked in a witch. If she couldn’t have Ambrosius, then no one could and she used all of the resources of Tresum to curse him. But after 200 years of vengeance and bitterness, Grace has mellowed to being not entirely evil and yet not entirely good.
Toby is the venerable good guy and everybody’s friend and remains always grounded in a world of magic and mayhem. All he wanted to do was settle down and have a good life with his boyfriend, Kevin. But to do that he had to battle forces he never dreamed of to keep Kevin from Ambrosius’ clutches. In the end, Ambrosius swayed Kevin to be his Tresum aspirant, stealing him away from Toby. But Toby picked himself up and moved on taking his relationship with friend Adam to a new level.
Kevin is the lost boy looking for his way. He moved to Dante’s Cove to be with Toby, but from a young age was haunted by horrific visions that drew him there. Although he wanted to be with Toby, he couldn’t shake his past or the attentions of mysterious Ambrosius. Leading him to discover the mysteries of Tresum, Ambrosius underestimated the power of his aspirant and succumbed to Kevin’s hunger for power and vengeance.
Van is an artist who only paints what she knows. And what she instinctually knows is the mysterious past of Dante’s Cove. By discovering a book of magic, she helped her friend Toby release his boyfriend from a spell, but found herself changing as the dormant powers of Tresum awakened in her. Becoming Grace’s aspirant helped her to understand herself and her power, but it led to her undoing and untold chaos for when she tried to bring her girlfriend back from the dead at the Solstice she unwittingly unleashed the House of Shadows on Dante’s Cove.
Adam appears to be ever the party boy, but it is only a front to cover his insecurities with his own sexuality. Rather than returning best friend Toby’s affection when they were young, he became his tormentor. Nevertheless, their friendship endured and his dreams come true when he and Toby finally hook up. Through his addiction to Saint he gained prophetic sight and had visions of unspeakable horrors that only Grace can interpret.
